How Qualifications Can Help You Move Up
This article is part of the Career Progression in Skilled Sectors guide.
In skilled sectors, qualifications serve two distinct functions: they demonstrate competence to employers, and they signal ambition and commitment. Both matter. The right qualification, gained at the right stage of your career, can be the single most effective lever you have to unlock the next opportunity.
Qualifications that open doors in skilled sectors
Health and safety — IOSH Managing Safely and NEBOSH General Certificate are widely valued across FM, engineering, operations and construction. NEBOSH in particular is often a gatekeeper qualification for supervisory and management roles.
Technical discipline qualifications — City and Guilds, NVQs and manufacturer-specific certifications in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, gas and building fabric. These demonstrate technical currency and are often required for specific role types.
Management and leadership — ILM or CMI Level 3/5 qualifications signal the move from technical to management and are valued by employers hiring for supervisory or contract management roles.
Professional body membership — IWFM (FM), IMechE or IET (engineering), CIPD (HR) — membership signals professional commitment and increases peer credibility.
How to choose which qualification to pursue
Ask these questions:
- What qualifications do the job descriptions for the role I want consistently require?
- What would make me competitive against candidates one level above me now?
- Which qualification would an employer be most likely to fund?
- What can I realistically complete alongside my current job?
Then ask Optio to match you with employers who will fund it.
